The Saturday after Thanksgiving is officially dubbed “Small Business Saturday” since American Express founded the event in 2010. With the craze of “Black Friday” and the surge of “Cyber Monday,” small businesses often get the short end of the stick on the biggest shopping weekend of the year. That’s why on November 26th, shoppers are encouraged to check out local small businesses who sell the same items at practically the same prices as big brand department stores. As an incentive, American Express cardholders get double points for shopping at small businesses.
When you shop local, you’re supporting your community and the families who dedicate their whole lives to their business. In return, you’re getting quality, durable products that will stand the test of time. By shopping local, your money does not go to corporations, big wig CEOs’ bank accounts, or the assembly of cheaply made items that will need replacing sooner rather than later.
So as you begin your holiday shopping, choose the mom and pop shop around the corner. Choose the local specialty store where you’re greeted with a friendly smile and a neighborly atmosphere. Not a huge conglomerate with long lines, bad attitudes, and factory-style setting. You deserve better than that and your community will be better for it.
